Adolescent Mental Health Treatment In Tennessee

Embrace U’s clinical team includes psychiatric providers who specialize in treating adolescents, licensed therapists, and nurses. We understand the struggles families face when dealing with depression and anxiety, and we offer professional, evidence-based mental health solutions in Brentwood, TN. Our intensive outpatient program is held after school, while our partial hospitalization program begins in the morning. Both programs utilize group and individual therapy sessions, where participants develop coping and communication skills.

Entering the transitional stages in life can be a highly stressful process. Adolescents experience extreme pressure to look and behave certain ways. The stress of school, social pressures and trying to fit in can lead to high rates of mental health struggles. The social stigma around mental health still exists, which can make it more challenging for teens to get the mental health treatment they need. At Embrace U, we help families understand the symptoms of a mental health challenge and learn how to navigate to a happier, healthier life.

Adolescent Mental Health Statistics

15% of children between the ages of 12 and 17 reported suffering at least one major depressive episode in the past year, according to Mental Health America

One in six youths reported making a plan to end their life by suicide, a 44% increase from just ten years ago, according to a 2019 survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

37% of high school students reported their mental health was not good.

44% said they felt sad or hopeless for at least two weeks in a row.

Factors responsible for this statistical increase include sexual identity issues among teens. Ethnicity and gender also play a role, with females and African Americans suffering the most significant increases in feelings of depression, suicidal thoughts, and general unhappiness, as compared to other demographics.

Overall, adolescents are significantly impacted by social and academic pressure, societal norms, and other factors, which may lead to a higher rate of mental health challenges. Embrace U helps adolescents improve their mental health and develop coping skills and techniques to live with symptoms of depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and other mental issues. How Are Adolescents Impacted By Mental Health?

Globally, 13% of 10-to-19-year-olds experience a mental disorder. Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability in adolescents, according to the World Health Organization.

Adolescents can be impacted by mental health conditions more severely than adults. This is partly attributed to the fact that adolescents are in a transitional stage of life, complete with drastic hormonal changes and peer pressure. They are also trying to navigate an uncertain world. In addition to societal pressures, ruptured self-esteem is another factor that can negatively impact a young person’s mental health state during adolescence.

One of our primary goals at Embrace U is to educate parents and their children about the prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents. Anxiety and depression are normal feelings for anyone to have at times, especially young people, but sometimes symptoms related to these feelings can become too much to bear alone. Many teens and pre-teens may not realize that what they are feeling isn’t a part of normal, everyday life, and they don’t have to struggle.

Education is an important first step to getting help with mental health concerns. As part of our intensive outpatient program in Brentwood, we ensure that both teens and their families receive education on mental health as an aspect of treatment to help support a stronger foundation in the future.

UNDERSTANDING TREATMENT

What Are the Challenges in Adolescent Mental Health Treatment?

There are perhaps more challenges in dealing with teens and pre-teens with mental health issues than any other group. A propensity for risky behavior, drug use, and health complications that coincide with mental health struggles can also make it more difficult to treat adolescents, even if they actively seek help for their mental health issues.

Three factors that can make getting mental health treatment for adolescents more difficult are:

  • Lack of awareness of the types of help that are available
  • Lack of ability to afford care, even if it’s offered
  • Lack of stable access to care

Each barrier to treatment poses a unique challenge. Awareness can be addressed by talking to and helping educate teens about mental health issues and the treatment options available to them. Accessibility and stable care are addressed through treatment clinics like Embrace U that accept a wide range of insurances and work closely with clients and their families to ensure the right treatment is in place for each child’s unique needs.
